Neo Norte

Neo Norte (New North) is an ongoing research project where Tere Chad invites a Latin American collective to turn the map of the world upside down. Inspired by the example of Joaquín Torres García, the artists involved have banded together to suggest that the South be viewed as the new North. Neo Norte manifests itself in various ways, through exhibitions, publications, performances, workshops and events. It attempts to challenge traditional curatorial practices and their ongoing Eurocentric vision and to promote instead its own identity, where Latin America is presented as offering a new creative direction.

The project which first started in 2017 has been presented in 4 countries: Santiago, Chile (2018); London, UK (2019); Helsinki, Finland (2021); Palermo, Segesta, Sicily, Italy (2023 – 2024).  More  than 80 artists have taken part and there have been more than 565,000 visitors. Neo Norte 5.0 is a participatory cultural project that uses upcycling and performance to reimagine the cultural values of the South that their creatives want to export to the world. The project will be developed in different stages in the course of 2024 and 2025 at the Memorial da América Latina, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Neo Norte explores four main sub-themes: migration as creative destruction, cultural syncretism, the integration of digital and the natural environment, and shamanism from a pre-Columbian and Western perspective.
